February Good News

The February edition of Good News is now available to download.

I hope that you benefit from the articles in this issue. With many people starting to celebrate Lent this month we need to think Biblically about whether that is appropriate or not. Thankfully Dr Donachie is on hand to help.

We have two reprints, one from Dr J.G. Vos (1903-1983), who was a RPCNA missionary to China, pastor in the USA, and professor at Geneva College; the other from Prof. Hugh J. Blair (1918-2011), who served as a minister in our Loanhead congregation for 11 years before serving the Irish Church. I remember in my childhood Prof. Blair’s preaching and kindness. Vos’ article encourages us not to be ashamed of singing Old Testament songs in worship as they are perfect for New Testament saints. Blair’s article is an encouragement to us in this chaotic world.

Rev. Stephen Steele and I conclude our series on the duty of dissent, focusing on voting in elections. Of all denominations in Scotland we are unique in holding this position, yet we do so for positive reasons, as is stated in the former Testimony of the RPCS: “A dissent, under a testimony for the truth, however painful in itself, we still consider to be our present duty, and we view it as intimately connected with the glory of Christ, the good of Zion, the prosperity of our country, and the happiness of man.” Such a topic is worth thinking over carefully.

We interviewed Dr Frank Smith, minister of Atlanta RPC. It is encouraging to see how the work is developing. In 2011, I did a Mission Team to this work, along with Brenda (before we were married), and Carla Steele (then Quigley!). We very much enjoyed Frank and Penny’s hospitality.

As always extra copies of Good News are available to share with people outside our denomination if you think they would benefit from the articles.
