At the Reformation in Scotland the Houston family had embraced Protestantism. In the 17th Century they moved from Scotland and settled in the North of Ireland. Young David Houston became minister to the Presbyterians at Glenarm then Ballymoney. Whilst in Ballymoney he was influenced by the great Covenanter preacher the Rev Alexander Peden, who also had fled from Scotland.
