On this day, 14th February 1570, John Knox preached an emotional sermon to over three thousand people at the funeral of James Stewart, 1st Earl of Moray and Regent of Scotland. The entire congregation were in tears as Knox spoke of the “Good Regent” and talked of his own sorrow at the loss of his friend.

Regent Moray had been assassinated in Linlithgow on the 23rd January 1570, the first assassination by a firearm anywhere in the world.

Knox’s title for the sermon was “Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord.”
