Reformation Tours: Battle of Bothwell Bridge

Today (22nd June) is the anniversary of the Battle of Bothwell Bridge, fought on the 22nd June 1679.

Approximately 3-4,000 poorly trained Covenanters faced an army of government troops 15,000 strong at Bothwell Bridge, which crosses the River Clyde near Hamilton.

Despite holding the bridge for a good while, they were eventually overpowered and many hundreds killed.

1,200 Covenanters were captured and taken to Edinburgh where they were locked up in a walled off section of Greyfriars kirkyard. Starvation, disease, banishment, and death would be the outcome for many of them.

The years following Bothwell Bridge became known as the “Killing Times” with many of those suspected of being at the battle hunted down and killed without trial.
